Emet put the mocha in front of Mercedes and sat. âFeel any better?â
She took a sip and put the mug down. âI feel like an idiot.â
âSo that would be better?â he said hopefully.
âIâm so sorry.â
âDonât apologize.â
âIâm bothering you at work.â
âSlow day.â
âMy familyâs so Godawful, Emet. You have no idea.â
âI bet I do.â
âThereâs nobody I could introduce you to if you wanted to meet them.â
âOkay.â
âAnd I suck at relationships.â
Emet chuckled darkly. âMe too. You could say.â
Mercey half-smiled. âOkay. You might have the edge on me there.â
âScore.â
âItâs justâ¦â she trailed off.
âWhat?â
She sighed. âI have this stupid, stupid ideaâ¦I keep thinking that if I hang in there long enough theyâll come around.â
âMm.â
âItâs not working out too good.â
âEverybody has a crazy family.â
She took another sip. âWhatâs yours like?â
Emet rubbed his knuckles. âI donât have much in the way of relatives,â he said.
âNo?â
âThereâs my mom. In Boston.â
âMineâs local.â She wrinkled her nose.
âDoes it matter?â
Mercey put her cup down. âIt shouldnât.â
âBut it does.â
âYes.â
Emet brightened. âHold on a secâthink I might have something.â He glanced at Eden Rose.
âOh, my, look at the time,â said Eden Rose. âTake fifteen, Emet.â
Emet gave a shy grin. He slipped into the back room, one hand pulling off his hair net and the other yanking his apron string. He emerged a moment later, zipping up his windbreaker. âReady?â he said.
Mercey stood. âWhere are we going?â
âI have magical grandparents.â
They walked across the street, Serena padding at Merceyâs side. The sun was not yet visible, but the clouds glowed white, and in the park the puddles shone like coins scattered in a buskerâs hat. By the fountain, Isadore and Daisy were doing close-up magic for a group of college students who were trying to figure out the trick. Isadore had just burned a card to ashes, then removed it, unscathed, from a young manâs hat. âDo it again,â said one of the students.
âNot on your life, son,â replied Isadore.
As Emet and Mercey joined the small crowd, Daisyâs mint-green eyes lit up. She pushed her way toward them, beaming.
âYou must be the young lady Emet was telling us about,â she said. âI had so been hoping we would meet you.â
